The horse is a beautiful animal with a glorious history as a good friend of humans very calm and relaxed animal. Horses are best for ride and polo.

Beautiful large eyes and colors with no danger make them the best companion for men.

Islam and Horse

Islam and horses have been linked since the origin of Islam. Even an entire chapter in Holy Quran devoted to horses named “Surah Al-‘Âdiyât”.Intact several Hadiths say about the beautiful creation of Allah.

Horse riding is a Sunnah sport, which means that our beloved Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ peace be upon him, highly recommended horse riding as a sport.

Horse meat as dietary 

During the Paleolithic, wild horses formed an important food source for humans. In many parts of Europe, the consumption of horse meat continued throughout the Middle Ages until modern times, despite a papal ban on horse meat in 732.

Is horse meat halal:

Horse meat was considered halal and delicious in Islamic history, but confusion arose afterward. Instead, it is “halal or makruh”.

Makruh “means it should avoid at all costs,”

Horse meat in Hanafi Fiqh

Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) thinks that consuming horse meat is Makruh Tanzihi due to its honor and because a horse is needed in wars and battles.

Imam Abu Yusuf (RA) and Imam Muhammad (RA) consider it to be halal, and it is said that Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) retreated to this opinion.  Therefore it will be permissible to consume, although best to avoid it.  (Hidayah p.441 v.4)

The perspective of Shia Muslims on horse meat 

There is some debate among Islamic scholars as to whether horse meat is halal for Shia Muslims. Sunni sources tend to allow horse meat, but both Sunni and Shia Hadith prohibit the consumption of mules.

“The Prophet Muhammad forbade the eating of mules and donkeys.” – Sahih al-Bukhari 5:58:227

“It is forbidden to eat the flesh of animals that die by themselves.” – Sahih Muslim.

In Kazakhstan, horse meat is known locally by its Russian name, “Konina,” and served to the guests. While this is the only Islamic country where you can quickly get horse meat, even with different dishes.


Based on the above explanation and reasoning, I concluded that eating horse is not Haram but makruh and should be avoided. Some health issues arise after eating horse meat.

So if something is not suitable for your health, you should avoid it; instead, you are Muslim, Shia, or a person with no faith.


Is horse halal in Turkey?

Officially, horsemeat is not eaten in Turkey. Not that it is illegal, but it is a taboo, the horse being a very respected animal that is not permissible for consumption by Islamic law.

When was horse meat banned?

On May 24, 2007, the last slaughterhouse in the USA producing horsemeat for human consumption was closed by State statute.

What is makruh meat in Islam? 

Makruh food, determined by the Quran, states that man should only eat pure food, and anything impure is regarded as makruh.
